Great Gong

INTRODUCTION

All sound, including that of a gong is caused by vibrations. There are all kinds of different sounds because different materials vibrate differently. Let's see how metal vibrates.

WHAT YOU NEED

• 1 piece of string
• 1 paper cup
• 2 paper clips
• 1 large nail
• 1 ruler

WHAT YOU DO

1. Put the string through the hole in the cup. Tie one paper clip to the end of the string that is in the cup.

2. Tie the nail to the other end of the string. Only use one knot so it will be easy to take the string off later.

3. Hold the cup up with the nail hanging down.

4. Tap the nail with the ruler. What do you hear?
